RESEARCH SUMMARY

Cellular dedifferentiation, the process by which a differentiated somatic cell reverts to an undifferentiated state, is a key process during tissue regeneration after wounding, in both plants and animals. Besides transcription factors, epigenetic factors also contribute to transcriptional reprogramming by creating an active or silent chromatin configuration; some of which are essential for maintaining stem cell activity.

The young root system of tomato plants is mostly composed of adventitious roots emerging form the hypocotyl, also known as shoot-borne roots.

RESEARCH LINES

Line 1: Genetic control of cellular reprogramming during de novo organ formation in plants

We have established a model for wound-induced adventitious root (wiAR) formation in tomato hypocotyls where specific auxin-responsive genes activate cambial cell division and root primordia specification in a subset of vascular cells. By combining genetic and biochemical approaches, we will identify the gene regulatory networks involved in wiAR formation and their conservation in other regenerative pathways.

Line 2: Identification of key factors involved in root system architecture (RSA) in cultivated tomato and wild relatives

Manipulation of RSA traits may improve water and nutrient capture under normal and extreme climate conditions. By using a genetical genomics approach, our group aims to elucidate the role of new regulators affecting valuable RSA traits.
